Get InvolvedThe Green Somali Initiative (GSI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable development in Somalia. Our mission is to create a greener, healthier future for all Somalis through community-led initiatives, education, and advocacy.
Founded in 2015, we have implemented numerous projects focused on reforestation, waste management, clean water access, and sustainable agriculture. We believe that environmental sustainability and community development go hand in hand.
Our work spans across multiple regions in Somalia, focusing on building resilient communities that can adapt to climate change while preserving their natural resources for future generations.
To promote environmental conservation and sustainable development in Somalia through community engagement, education, and innovative solutions that address the pressing environmental challenges facing our nation.
A Somalia where communities thrive in harmony with their environment, with sustainable management of natural resources, climate resilience, and green economic opportunities for all.
We work directly with local communities, government institutions, and international partners to develop context-specific solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and impactful.
Large-scale tree planting initiatives across Somalia to combat desertification, restore degraded lands, and increase forest cover.
Providing access to clean water through well construction, water purification systems, and hygiene education in rural communities.
Training farmers in climate-resilient farming techniques, promoting organic farming, and establishing community seed banks.
Raising awareness about environmental issues and sustainable practices through school programs and community workshops.
Implementing community-based waste collection, recycling initiatives, and promoting proper waste disposal practices.
Helping communities adapt to climate change through drought-resistant crops, water harvesting, and disaster preparedness training.
Since our establishment in 2015, the Green Somali Initiative has made significant strides in environmental conservation and community development across Somalia.
Our reforestation efforts have resulted in the planting of over 50,000 trees across 8 regions, helping to combat desertification and restore degraded ecosystems. These trees not only help to stabilize the soil and improve water retention but also provide sources of food, fodder, and income for local communities.
Through our clean water initiatives, we have provided access to safe drinking water for over 15,000 people in rural communities, reducing waterborne diseases and the time spent by women and children fetching water from distant sources.
Our sustainable agriculture programs have trained more than 2,000 farmers in climate-resilient farming techniques, leading to increased crop yields and improved food security in participating communities.
